In an effort to address the rising retail prices of tomatoes, the Central government directed the immediate procurement of tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The Department of Consumer Affairs has instructed the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation and the NCCF to procure tomatoes from mandis (wholesale markets) in these three states. The aim is to ensure simultaneous distribution in major consumption centers where retail prices have witnessed significant increases over the past month.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry has highlighted that price seasonality in tomatoes is primarily influenced by the cycle of planting and harvesting seasons, as well as regional variations. While normal price fluctuations occur due to these factors, temporary disruptions in the supply chain, crop damage caused by adverse weather conditions, and other factors can lead to sudden spikes in prices.

By offering tomatoes at a discounted rate, the government aims to provide relief to consumers and make this essential commodity more affordable. The discounted sale is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to stabilize prices and ensure the availability of essential commodities to the public. The initiative is expected to alleviate the impact of rising tomato prices and provide some respite to households in these areas.

Consumers in the specified locations are encouraged to take advantage of this discounted sale and purchase tomatoes at the reduced price. The government remains committed to addressing price fluctuations and ensuring the accessibility of essential food items to the public.
